This course provides an understanding of the democratic tradition and trace it’s influence in modern history to the present time.  Students will  develop analytical skills in terms of understanding and interpreting historical events.  Students will actively explore major events such as the Industrial Revolution, The World Wars, and the rise of Totalitarianism that have shaped our modern world.  You will research topics such as the Enlightenment, technology, and nationalism.  Finally, students will focus on a trouble spot in the world and complete a case study.

This class will contain lessons on the craft of writing as well as techniques for developing a strong writing practice. Each week, we will explore a specific aspect of writing, use creative visualization to stimulate the imagination, practice stream-of-consciousness writing and engage in active listening while students voluntarily share their work. Learning to give and receive feedback in a safe environment is an essential element of the class, and will build students’ confidence with self-expression. Course description

The World Literature course provides students with opportunities to explore and respond to multiple genres from various global, historical, and social contexts. As we examine world literature from ancient to modern day, we will consider the context that shaped these novels, epic poems, graphic texts, articles, and plays. Class participants will be expected to complete daily reading, annotate their text and analyze authors’ works for character development, motifs, themes, and literary style. Students will refine their thinking and write for a variety of purposes such as quick writes, journal responses, and essays. Students will utilize online resources, develop research techniques, and develop engaging presentations. As students expand their global boundaries through literature and research, the class will consider and apply real world methods to address humanitarian concerns that exist today.

In this 11th grade core English class, students will read American literature from the early 17th century. This course will introduce the student to the appreciation and experience of poetry. Students will read a wide a variety of poems form the classic to contemporary. Precalculus must be taken as a class (OVS or SRJC) and cannot be done independently. Precalculus is the fourth course in college preparatory mathematics for students who have completed Math 1, Math 2 and Math 3 or Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The course will deepen students’ knowledge of trigonometry and include content related to functions, modeling, mathematical analysis, statistics, and calculus. Students will also work flexibly and independently with some mathematics topics of their own choosing.

Ceramics ~ 2.5 credits 

Course description

This class is for students who want to enjoy exploring the art and craft of working with clay. Students will receive an introduction to historical, traditional, and current ceramic art. We will focus on two main areas: hand built tableware, such as plates, mugs, dishes and bowls, and ceramic sculpture. They will finish their tableware using food safe glazes. Sculptures will be finished using a wide variety of ceramic decorating techniques. Students will be encouraged to use their self-expressive ideas to create satisfying artworks in clay.

Course description

We will study the timeline of art history and become more fluent in the language of art appreciation. Advanced students will build on prior skills and complete a series of original work in a medium of their choice. Students will be expected to keep sketchbook and complete drawing assignments of increasing complexity throughout the year.

Course description

We will begin with line and form drawing and move into collage, encaustic, three dimensional sculpture and even jewelry making. We will incorporate a study of the timeline of art history and work on becoming more fluent in the language of art appreciation. Advanced students will build on prior skills and complete a series of original work in a medium of their choice.

Come explore art in many forms  of expressing oneself through paint. Advanced students will build on prior skills and complete a series of original paintings.

Course description

In this class, we will utilize our classroom printing press to create monoprints, collagraphs, and even engravings using a variety of printmaking materials and processes. We will explore traditional and hybrid relief prints as well as delve into artist profiles that allow us to examine the history and community that printmaking brings.

Course description

Maker Workshop is a hands-on class where students learn to design, create and innovate using a variety of tools, materials, and technologies. The course will cover a wide range of topics including 3D printing and design, electronics and robotics, woodworking, metalworking, and art and crafts. Students will learn to use tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering irons, and various hand and power tools to create a variety of projects. The course will also emphasize the importance of safety in using these tools and equipment. By the end of the course, students will have developed a range of skills and have a portfolio of projects to showcase their learning. The Maker Workshop is designed to be a fun and engaging course that encourages students to explore their interests, learn new skills, and develop their creativity. The course objective is to help students develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity skills through project-based learning.
